According to attorney Bill Marler who specializes in food borne illness cases, he’s seen his share of safety problems with the U.S. food system.
Marler has been involved in litigation of high profile cases like the Jack in the Box E. coli out break in 1993 which killed several children. The case prompted the government to adopt a no tolerance policy toward pathogens in foods. Marler says that cases like that are simply the ones that are noticed. There are many food recalls that go unreported to the public.
In fact, there have been over 8, 000 food products that have been recalled by the FDA with almost 100 of those recalled by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That was in 2014, the last time there is actually data available. Organic foods are not exempt, either.
There’s really no good system set up for food safety that adequately protects the American public, Marler believes.
Because of his insider’s knowledge about inadequate food safety measures in the U.S., Marler takes personal precautions by avoiding these six foods that are especially dangerous.
He believes the health risks are too great to ignore. He never eats:
- Raw or semi cooked eggs
- Rare meat (always well done)
- Unpasteurized juice and milk
- Raw sprouts
- Raw oysters
- Raw shellfish
His conviction is that there are pathogens like Salmonella and E. Coli that often exist in some of America’s food supply which is allowed by lax governmental oversight of the food industry. “You wouldn’t believe some of the things I have learned over the years,” he said. “I have some crazy stories.”
