Make a List

Start out by doing some research and start some lists of items that you are going to need. Sort the lists into general categories such as:

  • Water
  • Food
  • First Aid
  • Gardening
  • Security/Firearms
  • Hunting/Fishing Supplies
  • Power/Electrical
  • Communications

In each category, list any items that you may already have on hand.

Examine each category thoroughly to determine what you need in order to prepare for an extreme emergency. For instance, do you want to collect water in barrels? Do you have a swimming pool full of water? Do you live by a lake or stream where there is fresh water? What will you use to filter contaminated water?

Food is the next big item you need to consider. What should you buy? Where are are you going to store it? What are the best foods to purchase for long term or short term survival? How long will the food stay fresh? There are definitely staples that you don’t want to be without like flour or rice. You can put these two items in sealed Mylar bags and 5 gallon containers to retain freshness. You will also need a dry, moderate dark storage area in a which to protect your food cache. Fortunately, canned foods have a long shelf life.

Survival Classes

Take some survival and protection instructional courses ahead of time. If you don’t own a firearm, it’s wise to consider purchasing one. You want to be able to protect yourself, your loved ones and all of the emergency supplies you have accumulated. Take first aid/CPR classes. The world will not be the same if a serious disaster strikes.

Learn How to Garden

Start experimenting now so that if and when the time comes you will know how to grow your own food. If you live in an area that allows chickens, buy some chickens and build a coop for them. Fresh eggs will be a great bartering item if necessary. Even if you live in an urban area, you can experiment with growing some veggies in a small bucket garden on your balcony or patio. There are any number of ways to grow food when necessary.

Hunting for Food
If a disaster ends up creating a long term survival situation, you may end up completely off grid. If this is the case, how are you going to hunt for food? Do you have a bow and arrow, firearms and ammunition for killing larger animals?

Escape Plan

What about a plan to get out of Dodge? Do you have a way of communicating with your loved ones if cell towers go down? You need to develop a solid plan for your family to follow about where to meet up if disaster strikes. It can be your home or a safe place out of town if everyone can make it there. You can even devise a more intricate plan that involves an off grid safe home and transportation points along the way. Much of what you plan will depend on your current location such as in an urban area or country locations.
