My Personal “Perfume Stinks” Campaign: Exposing Dangers of Fragrance Products

fragrance product dangers

Did you know that the typical fragrance product contains at least 14 chemicals that were NOT required to be listed on the labeling?

And that’s not including up to 15 chemicals that ARE required to be listed!

Even though the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) can regulate toxic chemicals in personal care products and cosmetics, it doesn’t do it. In fact, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) tells why:

“When you see ‘fragrance’ on a personal care product’s label, read it as ‘hidden chemicals.’ A major loophole in FDA’s federal law lets manufacturers of products like shampoo, lotion, and body wash  include nearly any ingredient in their products under the name ‘fragrance’ without actually listing the chemical.

Companies that manufacture personal care products are required by law to list the ingredients they use, but fragrances and trade-secret formulas are exempt.”

Sooooo, the specific ingredients in various synthetic fragrances are protected as “trade secrets” and don’t have to be disclosed on the packaging. As a result, when you buy a product that has a ‘fragrance’, it might contain a large number of the over 3,000 common chemicals regularly used by manufacturers.

Dangers of Fragrance Products

Anyone who uses fragrance products of any sort, from perfumes to room air fresheners, are routinely exposed to phthalates, synthetic musks and parabens that are known to cause reproductive issues, disrupt the body’s hormones, and possibly cause cancer.

Dr. Mercola, noted physician and natural health proponent states,

“I caution against using any synthetic perfume or cologne, or any other synthetically fragranced personal care product, as they’re almost always loaded with synthetic chemicals that have been linked to cancer, reproductive toxicity, allergies, and more.”

Having sustained a life-altering chemical injury due to exposure to toxins, I also further encourage the avoidance of household fragrance products as well, such as washing detergents, dryer sheets, room air fresheners, and scented candles…just to name a few. There are always natural, healthier alternatives for those who take the time to discover them.

As for me personally, I can say with conviction that all synthetic fragrances really make me sick almost immediately…so stay away from me with fragrances…please, don’t wash with them, live with them or put them on. And please, don’t come around me smelling good, because…

You. Really. Stink.

No offense, of course. 😉
