If you love having your nails done while sitting back and relaxing in your favorite salon, this may not be welcome information. NEWS FLASH: Your hormones are being disrupted even as you become beautiful! And, unfortunately, it’s often both the toxic nail products and salons which are the culprits.
How? According to nutritionist and hormone specialist Alisa Vitti, chemicals in polishes can affect your hormones in crazy ways. Chemicals found in conventional nail polish can act as hormone disruptors to your endocrine system. This, in turn, can increase the uncomfortable symptoms of PMS and even impact fertility. Ouch!
What’s in Toxic Nail Polish and Manicure Products
Although there are many others, the worst of these unwelcome chemicals are typically in nail polish and other manicure products:
In fact, formaldehyde has been linked with increased rates of miscarriages, infertility and even cancer. DBP is also a biggie, in that it mimics estrogen in the body. It’s a phthalate-classified endocrine disruptor that has been proven to suppress fertility.
Toluene is now banned in Europe because it’s a neurotoxin. Yet, it’s still found in polish removers in the U.S.
Vitti says, “Some of the chemicals will be absorbed, as nail is living tissue.”
If that isn’t enough cause for concern, just being in some salons is putting yourself in a hormone disrupting setting. Vitti states that most salons use a variety of polishes that are filled with wicked chemicals.
She says, “Also, don’t do shellac or gels or tip application, as the chemicals used by those processes are extremely toxic.” Not only does your skin absorb the chemicals, but you also breathe them.
Well, what’s a woman to do?
Alternative Nail Polish Options that Are Less Toxic
This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to go cold turkey from enjoying your nail art and polish.
It’s wise to use at least 3 free nail polish manufactured without the most dangerous chemicals: DBP, toluene, and formaldehyde.
There are also 4, 5, 6, and 7 free options that have even less chemicals. 7 free is now the least toxic number rating.
For further protection, only go to salons that use these safer nail products exclusively.
Now, that might be a bit much for the most committed nail art aficionado. However, your health and your hormones will thank you for it.
Of course, if you’re a toxin avoiding minimalist like me, just go all natural and completely avoid the whole commercial nail polish and salon thing. But, at least you’ll know enough to guide your kids in a healthy direction! 🙂
